Van Gisbergen lacking speed, finishes second to Davison at Sandown

Will Davison continued to dominate the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint after winning Race 24 of the Repco Supercars Championship from pole at the Sandown Raceway, Victoria, on Saturday. Current championship leader, Shane van Gisbergen, finished second with Davison’s DJR Racing team mate Anton De Pasquale in third.

“I tried hard to battle with Will (Davison) but he was very fast today,” commented van Gisbergen who finished 8.5 seconds behind Davison. “I just couldn’t quite hang with him and then after the pit stop he was miles in front of me.

“I tried to give it everything we had but we weren’t quite quick enough. I hope we can get a bit more pace out of the car tomorrow because the guys next door are very quick.

“They had a lot more rear traction then us, so that’s something we’ll need to work on – I may have gone a bit too hard in that first stint too but these are things we’ll discuss tonight. It was still a reasonably tight race but hopefully we can put on a better show for everyone tomorrow.”

Van Gisbergen’s championship lead has now extended to 401-points over De Pasquale who has moved into second ahead of Cam Waters. Drivers and cars will return to the track for dual qualifying sessions at 10:55am local time on Sunday.
