Championship decider begins today as Adelaide 500 gets underway

Supercars racing returns to the streets of Adelaide today, as the VAILO Adelaide 500 kicks off on the famous streets of Adelaide.

This weekend’s event is the final race event on the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship calendar, and will see Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki and Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Shane van Gisbergen duke it out to be crowned 2023 Supercars champion.

It is also a special occasion for Melbourne driver Cam Waters, who will race in a unique Monster Energy livery on his Ford Mustang this weekend celebrating the late Ken Block.

Known for his success in rallying and his unbelievable stunt driving, Block is a motorsport icon, and was a popular part of the 2013 Adelaide 500 where he performed stunt routines and wowed the audience in his highly modified Ford Fiesta.

Block tragically passed away in a snowmobile accident in January, Waters and the Tickford Racing team will look to honour the late racing legend and generate awareness of the 43 Institute, founded in Block’s honour to create paths of opportunity for the exceptionally driven who may lack the proper support system for growth and success.

Waters comes to Adelaide with momentum on his side, having scored his first victory of 2023 at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 in late October. He was a pole sitter at the 2022 Adelaide 500, he has twice finished on the podium in Adelaide but has yet to win on the famous streets.

Supercars will stage two 250-kilometre races over the VAILO Adelaide 500 weekend, along with a host of support category racing from the Dunlop Series, S5000, Australian GT, and V8 SuperUtes, and an array of on and off-track entertainment.

Perth native Kostecki holds a 131-point lead over Red Bull driver van Gisbergen, as 25-year old Kostecki looks to seal his first Supercars championship.

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will be decided this weekend at the VAILO Adelaide 500, taking place November 23-26 on the famous streets of Adelaide.
