Both Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustangs showed pace in the early stages of the session, with Scott McLaughlin going to the top of the time sheets, before being displaced by his teammate Dabian Coulthard.
“We just stuck to our plan today, and the car felt really nice straight out of the box, which was great,” said Coulthard. “It’s early days, and and a long way to go but the early signs are positive. Saturday and Sunday are long races, and it’s going to be hot and tough for everyone. It was great to be back on track, and the Mustang is good, I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”
A red flag was called with 18-minutes remaining when McLaughlin’s car stopped on the circuit after losing oil pressure. The car was towed back to the pits, and took no further part in the session.
“We’ve got a new car, and it feels really good,” commented McLaughlin. “We focused on race runs, and the Shell V-Power Mustang feels good. Unfortunately, we had an engine issue that put us out of the session, but seeing Fabian up there is very promising. Overall I’m stoked, and we’ll get it sorted overnight.
Another red flag came with 13 minutes left on the clock, with James Golding into the wall at Turn seven. The session restarted with nine minutes on the clock.
At the end of the session, Coulthard was p3 behind Holdsworth and De Pasquale, with McLaughlin 12th.
Practice 2 is today (Friday) at 11:40am local time.
