It is race day at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, with a 250-kilometre race this afternoon at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne.

If any of the seven remaining Supercars Finalists win today’s race, they automatically clinch their spot in the bp Adelaide Grand Final later this month.

Kiwi championship leader Matt Payne is the early front runner, having topped Friday’s practice at the historic Melbourne venue.

Defending champion Chaz Mostert has work to do today, having managed only 20th in final practice on Friday afternoon.

The grid for today’s race will be set in Boost Mobile Qualifying from 11:20 a.m. AEDT, with the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout to determine the pole sitter for Saturday’s 79-lap race.

Today’s 250-kilometre race begins at 3:30 p.m. AEDT.

New Zealand’s Payne leads the Finals standings from Queenslander Broc Feeney, reigning Bathurst 1000 winner Brodie Kostecki, and defending Supercars champion Chaz Mostert in fourth.

At the start of play, Toowoomba’s Will Brown and Victorians Cam Waters and Anton De Pasquale sit below the fourth-place cut line needed to advance to the Grand Final in Adelaide.
