LIAM MACDONALD SCORES A PODIUM AT PUKEKOHE

Eighteen-year-old Invercargill driver Liam MacDonald secured a podium in an outstanding effort in Round 2 of the BNT NZ Touring Car Series at the ITM 500 V8 Supercar meeting at Pukekohe Park, south of Auckland, at the weekend.

MacDonald, the youngest driver in Class 2 of the category, finished third overall for the weekend in his GT Radial Ford Falcon after three strong results to stand on the podium in front of the massive crowds at the event.

The highlight was a fine second placing in the third and final race of the weekend behind reigning Class 2 Champion, the experienced Kevin Williams of Manukau City. Prior to that Liam had qualified fourth fastest in the class before taking sixth in the opening race on Saturday afternoon despite the fact his gear level snapped off at the base during the race. He rebounded with a strong fourth placing from sixth place on the grid in the second race on Sunday morning before securing a superb second place in the finale after starting fifth. MacDonald had overcome a snapped axle earlier in proceedings during the second practice session on Friday afternoon.

In typically modest fashion Liam declared himself “pretty pleased” with the weekend. He left Pukekohe, the second round of the series, fifth in the championship point standings despite missing the opening round at Taupo last month. MacDonald will miss the next round of the championship at Hampton Downs in North Waikato but will rejoin the series for the two South Island rounds including Teretonga Park in Invercargill in January.
