Look back in history Sunday: McLaughlin wins 2012 Dunlop Series, signs with GRM

A third place finish in the season finale, the Sydney Telstra 500, was enough to crown Scott McLaughlin the 2012 Dunlop Series V8 Supercars champion at Sydney Olympic Park.

Within a week it was announced that 19-year-old Gold Coast-based Kiwi would join the Fujitsu Racing GRM’s 2013 roster inthe V8 Supercars championship. 2013 saw the introduction of the Car of the Future, along with the inclusion of Nissan and Mercedes to join Holden and Ford.

McLaughlin made already his V8 Supercars Championship debut earlier in 2012 at the Sandown 500 in September, as co-driver to Jonathon Webb finishing 10th, before a strong sixth place at Bathurst.

Jamie Whincup and Triple Eight Race Engineering started the season as the defending drivers’ and teams’ champions. At the penultimate round at Winton Raceway whincup secured his defence of the Drivers Championship, with Triple Eight Race Engineering also wrapping up the Teams Championship.

Craig Lowndes finished second in the points standings from Mark Winterbottom, (Ford Performance Racing), at the final round of the series (in Sydney) to give Triple Eight their second consecutive 1-2 finish in the Drivers Championship.
