Invercargill racing driver Liam MacDonald is a finalist in a strong line up for the ILT Senior Sportsperson Of The Year Award at the Southland Sports Awards at Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill this Friday night (8 June).

MacDonald won Class 2 of the BNT V8’s Championship for the second consecutive year in his Speedy Signs Ford Falcon this year after a hard fought motor racing season. Since embarking on his first full national championship campaign in the 2016/2017 season he has won the national title twice now in as many seasons. He dominated the 2016/17 championship despite the fact he was visiting several of the circuits for the first time while this year after a strong start mechanical issues during the mid-point of the season meant he had to fight back and overcome adversity to retain his title.

He is one of six finalists in the Senior Sportsperson Category at the Awards alongside World Cup winners and NZ Track Cycling reps Eddie Dawkins and Kirstie James, World Champion axeman Bobby Dowling, Southern Steel Captain Wendy Frew and New Zealand Touch rep Patricia Hopcroft.

MacDonald and his team are keen to step into the Class 1 Championship next season and are currently working to put the sponsorship in place to do so.
