Returning Kings of the Mountain back for more glory

The chase for the Peter Brock Trophy begins today, as practice gets underway at the 2026 Repco Bathurst 1000.

For 11 drivers on this year’s 26-car grid, it is a chase for a return to the top step of the podium, with former winners ranging from 7-time winner Craig Lowndes to last year’s victor Matt Payne.

Defending Supercars champion Chaz Mostert, Dick Johnson Racing’s Brodie Kostecki, and 2017 winner David Reynolds spoke to media today at Mount Panorama as final preparations take place for this weekend’s Great Race.

Mostert is the tip of the spear as Toyota makes its Bathurst 1000 debut. The 2014 and 2021 Bathurst winner said it would be a “fairytale” if he could win Toyota’s first Bathurst.

Gold Coaster Mostert and Kiwi Fabian Coulthard won The Bend 500 in South Australia last month.

2023 Supercars champion and 2024 Bathurst 1000 winner Brodie Kostecki could make Bathurst history this weekend. The West Australian has scored pole for three consecutive Bathurst 1000s, and is looking to become the first to make it four in a row on Saturday.

Kostecki will also be without his regular engineer George Commins this week, after Commins suffered injuries in a mountain biking accident this past weekend.

DJR Team Manager Tom Moore will step in for Commins in leading Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood’s No. 17 Shell Ford.

Reynolds won a wet and wild 2017 Bathurst 1000, and finished runner-up in last year’s epic Great Race.

The Albury-native admits he embraces the chaos that Bathurst often brings, and hopes will benefit him in this year’s edition of the Great Race.

Fans will be able to meet the entire 2026 Bathurst 1000 field of cars and stars this afternoon, at the Repco Bathurst 1000 Street Party, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. AEDT.

Practice for the 2026 Great Race begins Thursday, with Boost Mobile Qualifying Friday, the iconic Top Ten Shootout Saturday, setting the grid for Sunday’s 1000-kilometre endurance classic.
