Two for van Gisbergen at Bathurst

Shane van Gisbergen has continued on his winning way, taking victory in the second race of the Repco Mount Panarama 500. The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver cruised to the chequered flag on Sunday at the opening round of the Repco Australia Supercars Championship ahead of Cam Waters and Chaz Mostert.

“The way this weekend went was awesome,” commented van Gisbergen. “The team has been so good, working with (David) Cauchi (Race Engineer) has been awesome and his strategies have been even better. The atmosphere in the whole team is really good.

“As I touched on yesterday, I was really frustrated with myself on Friday for making a few mistakes, but yesterday we rectified that, and today the car was awesome – much better in qualifying and in the race the balance was much better.

“It’s frustrating to race in pit lane, but the middle stint for us was awesome knowing I had to make a gap, but I’d rather have won the race by passing Cam (Waters) on the track. Overall, the car was magnificent, the strategy was on point, and it’s bloody good to leave Bathurst with two wins.”

Van Gisbergen will carry a 33-point lead over Mostert into the next round, the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint 21-22 March 21-22, with Winterbottom 69-points adrift in third.

Fourth-placed Davison is the only other driver within 100 points of van Gisbergen, with Whincup fifth, 102 points down.
