Two more wins for van Gisbergen at Sandown

Having finished a distant second to Will Davison in Saturday’s Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint at Sandown Raceway, Victoria, current Repco Supercars Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen won both Sunday’s races equalling Craig Lowndes’ tally of wins in a season.

“I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us today – hopefully we put on a cool show for everyone,” commented van Gisbergen. “It was pretty cool to race (R26) in those opening few laps because we were having some awesome battles, and it was a shame that Anton (de Pasquale) suffered damage and we couldn’t all battle it out.”

In the second race of the weekend, van Gisbergen won from pole with Chaz Mostert second and Will Brown third.

In the round finale, van Gisbergen won from a hard-charging Will Davison with Broc Feeney third, his second podium of the season.

“I’m so stoked for the team to get a double-podium and a huge congratulations to Broc (Feeney) and the entire crew at Red Bull Ampol Racing. What an awesome weekend overall.

“Will (Davison) has been really fast this weekend and I followed him yesterday and he was driving very well. In the last race, I knew I had to get him at the start, so I put maximum pressure on him. At the end I could see him coming, but I went as hard as I could and I didn’t look in the mirror – I just kept pushing.”

Only Scott McLaughlin’s record 18 wins in a season, set in 2019, is in van Gisbergen’s way of claiming the outright record.

Van Gisbergen now has a huge 500-point lead over Cam Waters, with Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale just behind. Van Gisbergen’s Red Bull Ampol Racing opened up its teams’ championship lead to 196-points over the Shell V-Power Racing Team.

The Repco Supercars Championship heads to New Zealand for the next round at Pukekohe Park Raceway, Auckland on September 9-11.
