Shane van Gisbergen, along with co-driver Garth Tander, have completed the opening practice day of the 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000 race satisfied with their times.

Van Gisbergen was seventh quickest (2:05.4753) while Tander was fourth fastest (2:06.0947) in the co-drivers only session.

“Our session this morning went quite well and it just felt great to be back at The Mountain,” commented van Gisbergen. “We worked through our program, ticked a lot of boxes and decided to put some new tyres on at the end to really capitalise on our data heading into the weekend.

“Most people seemed to put new tyres on at the end of the first session, but overall, it was a reasonable day. In the afternoon’s session, Garth (Tander) managed to get fourth, but there were some really fast guys in the co-driver session.

“Whether that was their tyres or if they were genuinely speedy, we’ll find out. Overall, I think it’s a solid start to a big few days ahead.”

“It’s been a long wait to get back in a Supercar here, that’s for sure,” said Tander. “It was good to get back in the car and do a proper session. Even though we got a run at Sydney Motorsport Park, it wasn’t really a proper session, so it was good to get that under my belt.

“I felt comfortable straight away, so I got stuck into some setup work and worked through our program overall, and I was really happy with the progress. My feedback to (David) Cauchi (#888 Race Engineer) was very similar to what Shane (van Gisbergen) had to say after his session this morning.

“We’ll just go through some of the changes that I made, versus some of the changes that Shane made to get the most out of the car. All of our focus at the moment is on the race car, and we’ll work on setups to make the car a bit more nicer to drive, and keep our momentum up.”
