Having won the opening race of the Repco Supercars Championship on Saturday, Shane van Gisbergen crossed the line in sixth place in the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight finale on Sunday. The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver and current Supercars champion was quite circumspect about the opening round despite a remarkable comeback performance having qualified 21st on Sunday morning.
“We struggled in the mixed conditions all weekend, and this morning’s qualifying was no different. We were one of the first to cross the line, but I kerb-hopped and made a mistake, but we probably weren’t much better than where we qualified which is a shame.

“The first half of my race was pretty poor driving on my behalf,” commented van Gisbergen. “The car was really good in the dry, and then in the mixed wet-dry conditions, we weren’t very good. The team put a great strategy in place to get us back on the lead lap, then we had a chance to gain some spots.
“I made some better calls and the team did a good job putting on wet tyres at the right time. Sixth is an awesome result from 21st, but it doesn’t tell the story of how our day went as a whole.”
Chaz Mostert won the race and the overall lead in the championship having finished third on Saturday. Fastest qualifier, Brodie Kostecki, came home in second with Anton De Pasquale third.
The next round is the NED Tasmania SuperSprint 26-27 March 2022 at Symmons Plains Raceway, Launceston in Tasmania.
