Van Gisbergen on top in Sonoma

Shane van Gisbergen won Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway with Trackhouse Racing’s teammates Daniel Suárez finished 14th and Ross Chastain 24th. Starting from pole, SVG led six times for a record-setting 97 of the 110 laps, and survived three late cautions in the final 15 laps to win his third consecutive road course race and earn his fourth Cup victory in just 34 career races.

He now becomes the fastest driver to four wins in the Cup Series since Parnelli Jones and the first driver since Jeff Gordon to win three consecutive road course Cup races from the pole.

“It means everything,” said van Gisbergen. “That’s why I race cars. I had an amazing time in Australia, and then to come here and the last couple of years actually has been a dream come true.”

It was Trackhouse Racing’s fourth victory in 2025 and 12th victory since it began NASCAR Cup Series racing in 2021. Van Gisbergen has the most wins for a non-American driver in NASCAR history.

“So stoked for Red Bull, Trackhouse, Chevy,” said SVG. “I believe we had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that. Hard to believe that, isn’t it. I just have to thank these guys. We built up all year, got better and better, and now we need to keep getting better on the ovals and start proving some people wrong.”

Van Gisbergen is one of five Team Chevy drivers to earn a playoff berth. He delivered the Bowtie brand its ninth victory in 20 points-paying races thus far this season.

With fellow Team Chevy driver, Connor Zilisch, picking up the win in yesterday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, Chevrolet now owns three-straight doubleheader weekend sweeps on road courses in NASCAR’s top two divisions, dating back to Van Gisbergen and Suarez’s triumphs in Mexico City.

Van Gisbergen also owns four career Xfinity Series victories, including the Chicago race last weekend.

In Stage 1 on Sunday, Chastain started fourth and led the final three laps to win his 14th career stage victory. Van Gisbergen dominated the stage, leading 22 laps before pitting with three laps to go for a better starting spot in Stage 2. He still managed to finish second. Suárez climbed from 19th to 15th in the opening laps before he pitted as well and finished 27th.

All three Trackhouse cars pitted in the closing laps of Stage 2 as Van Gisbergen dominated again, leading 27 laps for his second career stage victory. Chastain finished 24th and Suárez 34th.

“What a great couple of weeks! Just to execute, make no mistakes, have great pit stops, great strategy and be able to hold them off there at the end – it’s incredible,” said SVG.

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to action on Sunday, July 20, at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway.
