Van Gisbergen wins Supercars opener in Newcastle

Shane van Gisbergen has dominated the Thrifty Newcastle 500 opener in Newcastle, winning the first race of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

“Today was a huge day for the team,” commented van Gisbergen. “The amount of effort that not only our team has put into building these cars but the whole category has been amazing.”

Along with team mate Broc Feeney, the Red Bull Ampol Racing duo gave Chevrolet the best possible reintroduction into Supercars with a one-two finish.

“For us to get a team one-two is amazing, and it’s so special for the team because they’ve all worked so hard and the cars have run really well.

“We had a few issues that we’re struggling with, but I guess most teams are in the same position. It was just an awesome way to start the season in these new cars.

“Tomorrow will be really hard to back up – I’m a bit sore but there looked like there were a few other guys who were quite cooked – it was a really tough race. I had a shocking top ten shootout lap which was disappointing today, but we’ll work on improving that tomorrow.”

Feeney completed the quinella 14.7408s in arrears of his teammate, with Tickford Racing star Cam Waters the first Mustang home in third.

Sunday’s action will commence with ARMOR ALL Qualifying at 11:15am (local time), followed by the Top Ten Shootout at 12:35pm.

The Thrifty Newcastle 500 will conclude with the 95-lap Race 2 at 3:20pm.
