For many of us (over 50) the city of Miami in Florida came to our attention with the American crime drama television series Miami Vice! It ran for five seasons (September 1984 to June 1989) and starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami, Florida.
It was a popular crime show with fast sportscars, hot ‘babes’ and hot weather, great fashion, music and the criminals always got caught. However, the lasting impression in this writers’ mind was an uneasy feeling of sleaze. It certainly didn’t come across as a go to holiday destination other than for the weather, although that could be said about most police/crime programs aired in the days of only three TV channels, no YouTube, Netflix or social media.
The impressionable youth of today will have a different take on Miami with the Formula One circus becoming more established with its fourth annual Grand Prix this weekend. Yes, there will be high fashion, lots of fast cars, lots of hot weather and people (babes is no longer PC) and the good guys will win the day.
It’s the first time that Liam Lawson will get to compete in anger on the 3.363 mile (5.412 km) long Miami International Autodrome, a purpose-built temporary circuit around Hard Rock Stadium and its private facilities in the suburb of Miami Gardens.
Lawson looked more comfortable and relaxed at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix two weeks ago and put in a solid performance. He didn’t do anything wrong.
“I’m super pumped to be going to Miami,” commented Lawson. “Although I’ve been as a reserve driver, it’s the first time on track for me at the race. The atmosphere looks super cool and exciting, so it’s going to be a great feeling racing for VCARB there.
“It’s a Sprint weekend too and the heat is going to be tough, so I’m doing everything I can to prepare for that while working hard to learn the track. I can’t wait to get out there.”
More of the same please Liam, is our expectation. Points are always a nice bonus!
I still can’t get that first impression of the circuit out of my mind, back in 2022 and that fake marina they constructed. Slightly sleezy!
