Besides the Australian Supercars round at Pukekohe each November, the annul Skope Classic undoubtedly boasts the biggest crowds of any motorsport event in New Zealand.
Held at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch, the 2019 weekend featured one of the best line ups of Historic Touring cars, the Formula 5000’s, Mainland Muscle Cars and a great lineup of Formula Junior single seaters.
Each year there is the standard classes such as the two classic saloon classes of Harold Heasley and Ron Silvester Saloons as well as the Stanton Brothers Sports and GT’s. It also featured the Pat Hoare Formula Libre and Murray Maxwell Vintage Car Club.
A late minute and exciting addition to the program was the first public appearance of the Rodin FZED F1-type experience car, demonstrated by Greg Murphy. The Rodin* is the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur David Dicker, with the idea of building a track-only F1 car. Instead of buying an expensive ex F1 car, Dicker will give the opportunity to drivers’ to buy a brand new F1 experience race car.
Crowds at the 2019 edition of the Skope Classic are reported to have increased. The popular event is easy going and family friendly. The ‘recipe’ for success is just right.
The 2020 dates have been set so mark your calendars for 31 Jan-2 February 2020.
*Auguste Rodin was a French Sculptor (1840-1917). His work ‘The Thinker’ shows a nude male figure of over life-size sitting on a rock with his chin resting on one hand as though deep in thought, often used as an image to represent philosophy.
