It is reported that the 2019 Asian Formula 3 Winter Series (AWS) is ineligible for Formula One Super Licence points.
Originally the Series was included on the FIA list of those eligible for points (18 December 2018). Now Autosport.com is reporting that the AWS no longer fills the criteria now required by the FIA.
Two key components for eligibility are a minimum of five race weekends held at a minimum of three circuits. Currently the AWS has nine races over three rounds at two different circuits. The opening round was at Buriram in Thailand two weeks ago while the second round was held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia last weekend and the third round will again be at Sepang 22-24 Feb 2019.
All eyes have been on Brit Daniel Ticktum who targeted the AWS as a means to obtain five more Super Licence points that would enable him to drive in F1 this season should the opportunity arise. This had meant he would only have to finish in the top three to gain the necessary points. However he is languishing down in eighth place with one round to go and now with the Series unlikely to be eligible he may not be on the grid for round three.
Here in NZ we now focus on the third of five rounds of the 2019 Toyota Racing Series at Hampton Downs this weekend. This is the third of five different circuits that host the single-seater series where seven Super Licence points are available to the ultimate winner.
