Courtesy of his second place in this afternoon’s race one of round two of the Carrera Cup Australia championship – being held at the Australian Grand Prix – Andre Heimgartner now leads the championship standings.
Previously, Heimgartner was tied for the lead with David Wall, courtesy of his round one results (round win, two wins and a third place).
Heimgartner had started the race on the front row alongside team-mate Nick McBride, after qualifying just 0.0181s off the P1 pace earlier in the day.
With McBride having the advantage off the start and some understeer developing in the #777 Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche towards the end of the race, while Heimgartner stayed in touch for the entire race he wasn’t able to get a pass for the lead done.
Even so, with the result seeing him move into the title lead officially, the 21 year old Melbourne-based Kiwi is all smiles.
“To be in the lead of the championship is very exciting and while things didn’t go all our way in race one today, it is pointing in the right direction and I am confident of more strong results across the next three races,” Heimgartner said.
“Nick had the advantage into turn one having started on pole, and while I was right with him for the whole race and pushing hard, it just wasn’t to be.
“We will address the understeer issue overnight and come back stronger and ready to fight again for race two – which we will start on the front row again thanks to today’s result.”
Race two will be held on Friday the 24th of March at 2.55pm local time, before Saturday and Sunday hosts races three (12.45pm) and four (1.50pm) respectively.
