Nick Cassidy and co-driver Ryo Hirakawa have savaged an unlikely podium at the latest round of the Super GT Series at the Autopolis in Japan. Having qualified in seventh, the #37 KeePer TOM’s LC500 spent most of the race in the top ten.
Having pitted on lap 30/55, Cassidy swapped places with Hirakawa who continued to maintain their pace. A safety car intervention and then rain changed the nature of the race from lap 36. While many opted for wets (tyres), Hirakawa stayed out on the slippery conditions that eventually begun to dry as the race came to its conclusion.
Hirarkawa was able to move up to fifth on the penultimate lap and then to third on the final lap, claiming an unlikely podium.
The winner in the GT500 class was the #39 DENSO KOBELCO SARD LC500 (Heikki Kovalainen/Yuichi Nakayama) ahead of the #17 of Koudai Tsukakoshi and Bertrand Baguette.
Cassidy and Hirakawa remain second on the points table ten-points behind Kazuya Oshima and Kenta Yamashita with two rounds remaining.
