Race 1 declared a non-event as Surfers streets bite

RACE 1 of the penultimate round of the 2026 Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia championship has been declared a ‘non-event’ following a significant crash at the start of the second racing lap on Saturday on the Gold Coast.

Nine cars were involved in the accident exiting turn three: Lockie Bloxsom, Caleb Sumich, Hamish Fitzsimmons, Oscar Targett, Brett Boulton, Matt Slavin, Matt Belford and Dean Cook were all involved.

Eight drivers were checked at the circuit medical centre and cleared of any injury while Lockie Bloxsom was taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.

Teams are already well underway in assessing the damage ahead of race two, scheduled for 8:10am local time tomorrow morning. Several cars are expected to return to the circuit tomorrow, pending repairs.

It’s just the eighth time in 466 Championship races that a result has not been declared due to the leader not completing a second racing lap.

As a result, no championship points other than those scored in qualifying, will be awarded.

Earlier in the day, Sonic Motor Racing celebrated an emotionalfront-row lock out in qualifying as the team commemorates the life of motorsport great, Garry Rogers.

Rogers was the uncle of Sonic chief Michael Ritter and the team is celebrating his life this weekend.

It was Sonic’s first Carrera Cup pole since 2022 and the first for teenager Marcos Flack in his Carrera Cup career.

Matt Slavin scored pole in the Pro-Am class for both races, while Bayley Hall will start on pole in race two on Sunday morning.
