The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia returns to the Shanghai International Circuit with its opening round of the 2018 season taking place in support of the Chinese F1 Grand Prix this weekend.

The 2017 season champion Chris van der Drift of Team Formax enters into the new season as he looks to seal his third series win. However, he will be once again challenged by close 2017 season rival and runner-up Martin Ragginger of Team Porsche Holding, who narrowly missed the championship after tough fights with van der Drift and Will Bamber throughout the year.

With drivers getting the chance to warm up with the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car during the Official Test Days in March, the latest engineering from Porsche is already proving to be more powerful than the previous generations. During five test sessions held throughout the warm-up weekend, drivers repeatedly registered lap times that were more than 1 second quicker than previous years.

Making a strong pre-season impression in their categories, Bamber achieved the fastest time for Overall with a 2:07.134 lap, while Novu Racing’s Yuey Tan managed the quickest in Pro-Am with 2:09.346.

With everything set for a highly dramatic season start, 28 drivers from 12 countries and regions will go head to head in the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car (Type 991 II) for the first time.
