Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suárez finished seventh, and teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Ross Chastain finished 14th and 19th in Saturday night’s 400-lap NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway.
Van Gisbergen turned in one of his most impressive oval races in his first Cup race at Richmond. He flirted with a top-10 late in the race before finishing 14th, matching his season best on an oval.
“That was fun,” said SVG! “A good recovery and great result in my first Cup start at Richmond. Tyre strategy was huge tonight, and my #88 WeatherTech team did an awesome job executing.
“Some good momentum for us as we get closer to the playoffs. Looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish at Daytona.”
Suárez drove to second from his 21st starting spot in the second stage, then battled in the top five most of the final stage before finishing seventh. It was his fifth top-10 of the season and second consecutive seventh-place finish.
Chastain avoided damage in the race’s biggest wreck during Stage 2 and battled handling issues before finishing 19th.
Suárez charged from 27th to 10th in the all-green flag first stage, while Chastain and Van Gisbergen finished 21st and 22nd. All three Chevrolets pitted once during the stage.
Suárez started sixth in the second stage and kept going forward, finishing second. Van Gisbergen continued his climb, finishing 18th. Chastain received minor damage in a multiple-car wreck on lap 198 and finished 23rd.
The NASCAR Cup Series returns to action on Saturday night at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
