Christchurch racer, Ben Byers will enter the Rodin Cars Super GT Series this coming summer, piloting his recently acquired 2019 Porsche 991.2 Cup Car.
A regular competitor in Endurance racing aboard his Porsche and an Audi GT3, Byers says the Super GT Series is the next challenge for himself as a driver.
“I’ve really enjoyed the endurance racing I’ve done over the last few years – It’s been great to have co-drivers like Jaxon Evans and Christina Orr-West to learn off,” says Byers.
“Having a well credentialed co-driver certainly gives you no-where to hide when you look at the lap times and given that you’re driving the same car!”
“But it’s been good being able to improve and get faster every session you get in the car.”
“It’s time to test myself in another series. If you look at the Super GT Series, the drivers largely have similar skill levels and are all in similar machinery and the Porsche is just simply such a great car to race.”
At each round of the Rodin Cars Super GT Series, the weekend will feature two 30-minute races along with one 60-minute race, all with a compulsory pit stop – formats that Byers says appeals to him.
“The races are shorter which will add to the race intensity, and I’m looking forward to being able to fight for positions during the race which will be tough for all the class leaders due to the enforced BOP timed pit stops – and like any driver, you want to get out there and try and win a race.”
The Rodin Cars Super GT Series will consist of four rounds over three months commencing January 15, 2022, at Highlands in Cromwell.
This will be followed by the second round at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Rupauna in Christchurch on January 22-23, before heading to Hampton Downs on February 12-13. The final round will be in Taupo on March 26-27, 2022.
