With just three months to run before the 2021/22 Canterbury Car Club silverware is returned and polished for the presenting of the awards for this Covid interrupted season, things are tight in some area’s of competition. There were 52 events planned but it is a great testimony to the club’s management that only 5 events have been lost.

Navigation Rallies: The Rossendale Rally crew of Ian McKee, Brent Rawstron and Peter Monroe currently hold a very slender three-point lead over the CCC Office crew of Mark Wederell, Barry Higham and Chris Protheroe (current trophy holders) with Peter Flewellen, Shelly McSaveny, Ray Hunton and Allan Coker who make up the Rallyota crew 20-points adrift. With four events to go before season end, could this all change?

Motorkhana: After the 10th round run this month, the tarmac exponent and last year’s winner Neil Gardner (Lotus/Starlet) is languishing in 3rd on 202 points. Seven-times National Champion Steve Hall, who has returned to competition after some years off to rebuild his Mini, has used the grass events to build an 11-point lead over John Rathgen (Pulsar GTi-R) on 205 points. There are just three rounds to go, one grass and two on the track. With only 75% of rounds counting, dropping the worst can be the best thing for a come from behind win!

Autocross: John Rathgen is also leading the race for the Trophy once again after 4 rounds with 3 or more to go. Neil Gardner, Steve Hall and Tony Chapman (MX5) are chasing with another 4 in hot pursuit. The 2 worst rounds will get dropped in the final count.

InterClub (incl Hillclimbs), the biggest contributor to the Club’s current leading position in the Interclub Series is Malcolm Hoogervorst (Silvia) with a big lead over 2nd placed Sharon Kier (Civic).

Speed – Dual Car Sprints, Malcolm Hoogervorst (Nissan Silvia) has a nine-point advantage over Jeremy Lush (Lotus 7) on 66-points with Ross Bristol (Westfield) on 60 points.

Drift: After three rounds of this season’s series, Zac Palmer (200SX) is leading Brogan Mooney and Daniel Johnson. There is just one round remaining as the season has been reduced to four rounds.

Race – Clubmans Saloons: Josh Ward (Civic) has a one-point lead over Paul Brooks (Nissan 200SX) with Malcolm Hoogervorst (Nissan Silvia) a mere four-points back with 2 rounds to go.
Race – Clubmans Classic Saloons Not quite as tight here with Bruce Henderson (RX3) holding six-point lead over Graham Crow (MX5) and Maurie Bone (Anglia) in third.
Race – Clubmans – Singleseaters, local hero, James Penrose, has a healthy 15-point lead.
Race – Continental Rennsport – The race for the Rennsport Trophy is being led by the winner from last season, David Proud (BMW M3) on 181-points with Jeff Luskie (Porsche GT3) and Mark Denton (BMW E30) chasing hard.

The trophy off the top shelf, the one that comes with a multitude of free entries, is the magnificent A P Marryatt Trophy – Club Champion of Champions.

Every year, every Canterbury Car Club member has the opportunity to win free entries. The winner of the annual Club Championship is given up to 15 event entries and a number of free garage rentals by scoring points in 20 of the more than 50 events run by the club from July 1 to June 30. Second place wins up to 10 and third wins up to 5 entries and each takes home a very nice trophy to remember their achievements.

The rules are simple. Compete in at least four different disciplines out of the 7 that are run over the year. Each has its own championship.

Points for the best five results in each of the types of events are accumulated to be the Club Championship score, however, ONLY 20 scores count. The lowest points are dropped off as better ones are earned ie: A win earns 30-points and if the worst points were a 10th placed 11-points, the 11 is dropped and the overall score increases by 19-points.

In 2021, the 56th winner of this championship was Peter Flewellen (Fraser/BMW Mini/MX5), with 383-points earned from competing in 33 of the 54 events the club held.

Peter currently sits second on 279-points with Allan Coker (main photo) making full use of his recently acquired GR Yaris to lead on a massive 323-points having competed in Dual Car Sprints (Speed), Motorkhana, Autocross, Navigation Rally and Interclub events.

In third is John Rathgen (Pulsar GTi-R/Fiesta ST) with 234-points. Not too far behind are Tony Chapman (Mini/MX5) 221-points, Chris Protheroe (BZR) 214 and Steve Hall (Mini/GR Yaris) 203.

Allan has competed in 24 of the 35 possible events to date whilst Peter has done 20 and John just 14. This time of the season is for those doing the late charge by entering a Motorkhana or an Autocross when they might only have done the speed sprints earlier in the year. They will earn full points when the leader’s points are reduced by deleting lower scoring events. It all makes for a great competition.
