Looking for a new challenge, track day racer, David Cranna will enter his McLaren 570 GT4 in the Rodin Cars Super GT Series in 2022.
His first foray into competitive track racing, Cranna says he is looking to take the next step from being a Hampton Downs GT member and getting out on track with a wide variety of other GT4 machinery.
“I’ve had a couple of McLaren road cars before and after some discussion with Luke Neuberger from McLaren Auckland, I elected to get the GT4 car to run on the track instead of a road car.”
“Though it’s not as powerful as the road car, it enables you to run with slick tyres, and then with that, the trick is to establish how brave you can be with the tyre.”
“It will be my first foray into proper circuit racing, no expectations, just aiming to finish each race and not to damage the car!”
Cranna’s car is a 2017 McLaren 570 GT4, which arrived in New Zealand in March straight out of the European Pure McLaren series – the same series that fellow competitor Brent Forman’s car ran in before coming to NZ.
Like Forman’s car, Cranna’s also received an update to current specifications at McLaren’s factory in Woking, United Kingdom.
The Cranna McLaren will be run by the Prime Speed Sports organisation, which will run a number of other GT4 entrants.
“Obviously with Lockdowns, we haven’t been able to get out to Hampton Downs to run the car for over three months now. But the plan is to get out there in mid-December and do some further driver training with Mike Eady and Jason Liefting to sharpen up the skills ahead of round one at Highlands.”
Familiar with Hampton Downs, Cranna says it will be an all-new experience when the series goes to the South Island, two circuits he’s never driven at.
“I’ve never driven at Highlands nor Ruapuna. I’ve been scouring YouTube to find some onboard footage to try and familiarise myself before I get down there. Looking forward to it, Highlands looks like an amazing circuit.
The Rodin Cars Super GT Series will consist of four rounds over three months commencing January 15, 2022, at Highlands in Cromwell.
This will be followed by the second round at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Rupauna in Christchurch on January 22-23, before heading to Hampton Downs on February 12-13. The final round will be in Taupo on March 26-27, 2022.
