Two female motorsport volunteers – Auckland’s Krystal Brock (left in picture) and Christchurch’s Carla Lynn (right in picture) – have been selected for this year’s MotorSport New Zealand female official trans-Tasman exchange programme.
Organised by MotorSport NZ’s Women in Motorsport Advisory Commission, the trans-Tasman exchange programme is designed to expand the knowledge, skills and understanding of the successful applicants and is being run for the fourth consecutive year.
Due to various circumstances, the Australian Women in Motor Sport Commission has opted not to send a participant this year. This means, thanks to the support of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, Krystal Brock will be the New Zealand participant hosted at October’s Gold Coast 600 in Queensland and Carla Lynn will have the opportunity to attend the ITM Auckland SuperSprint taking place this weekend (12-15 Sept).
MotorSport New Zealand President Wayne Christie is delighted that two New Zealand women are set to benefit from the exchange programme.
“The opportunities for observing and learning from experienced event officials at the high-profile Supercars events is invaluable for our motorsport officials,” says Christie. “It’s fantastic recognition for the hard work and dedication to motorsport that both Krystal and Carla have shown to date.”
Brock, age 25, will have her own role at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint this weekend – she’s the senior event volunteer supervisor for the Supercars round at Pukekohe. Born into a rallying family, Brock has had a long involvement with the New Zealand Rally Championship where she is currently one of the RallyLive team which livestreams interviews and action to 20,000+ followers. She is also a member of MotorSport NZ’s Youth Commission providing a valuable perspective on the sport to the governing body.
Brock says: “My passion is being involved with the wider volunteer community, as this involves licensed officials as well as unlicensed volunteers. I enjoy supporting the competitors and crews with my various roles and I’m keen to expand my knowledge of this important aspect of the sport.”
Lynn describes herself as part of the furniture at Mike Pero Motorsport Park (Ruapuna) in Christchurch, where she helps with a variety of tasks for the Canterbury Car Club, including organising volunteer marshals. In 2018, Lynn’s 20+ years of involvement with the club’s activities were recognised with an outstanding service to motorsport award.
Lynn says: “I would love the opportunity to go and see how it all works at different tracks, which is why I applied for this year’s exchange programme. I’m looking forward to meeting new people along the way too.”
