Christchurch driver Martin Neill will enter his Porsche 997.2 in the Porsche Class of the Rodin Cars Super GT Series when the series gets underway in January.
It’s been a fast progression for Neill in motorsport, having competed for two years in the South Island 2K Cup Series, before progressing into the Porsche 997.2 he currently races at events in the South Island.
Neill will enter his Porsche 997.2 alongside longtime friend and business partner Ben Byers who will race a Porsche 991.2 Cup Car. Neill saying that it was Byers who has had an influence on his amateur motorsport career.
“Ben has done a lot of racing, starting way back in Super Karts. I’ve always loved cars and racing, and when Ben got back into racing, I just had to get involved too,” says Neill.
“I started off at the entry-level end, doing 2K Cup, before jumping in the deep end and getting the Porsche which I absolutely love.”
“The 2K Cup stuff was great. It gets pretty wild there in the mid-pack, so I learnt pretty fast how to avoid trouble and some of the car to car contact that goes on.”
More recently Neill has competed in all four rounds of the South Island Endurance Series.
“The Porsche is such an amazing car to drive, and with the help of the James Marshall Motorsport team, my times are dropping every event and I come in off the track just wanting to get back on.”
With no real expectations for the season, Neill says the focus will be continual improvement and keeping within distance of the faster drivers ahead.
“If I can stay close to them I’ll be happy. I haven’t raced at the two North Island circuits before, so will have to learn those tracks on the go.”
The Rodin Cars Super GT Series will consist of four rounds over three months commencing January 15, 2022, at Highlands in Cromwell.
This will be followed by the second round at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Rupauna in Christchurch on January 22-23, before heading to Hampton Downs on February 12-13. The final round will be in Taupo on March 26-27, 2022.
