Nelson’s Steve Sullivan will step out of his 900hp Sprintcar and slot into a Porsche 991 Cup Car in the Rodin Cars Super GT Series which commences at Highlands Motorsport Park at Cromwell in January.
“Circuit racing is a little bit new to me, I’ve largely done speedway, with over 25 years in Midgets, Saloons & Sprint cars,” says Sullivan.
“In fact, I’ve never raced anything other than dirt before!”
“There aren’t too many similarities between the cars, so I’ve got no real expectations for the season ahead, the main objective is just to finish each race and get better and better.”
Steve’s son, Brett was originally supposed to be driving the teams Porsche 991 however a testing accident at Ruapuna earlier in the year has curtailed that plan.
“Brett had a pretty serious accident at Ruapuna while testing, it wrote off the car and put him in hospital.”
“We’ve bought a new car for the series, the ex Callum Hedge Porsche from Australia, and I’ll step in and do the driving for now until Brett is fully recovered and able to drive again.”
“He’ll still be involved on race weekends with the team, helping run the car and maybe giving me a few pointers!”
Each round of the Rodin Cars Super GT Series will feature two 30-minute races along with one 60-minute race, all with a compulsory pit stop. There will be the option of one or two drivers per car.
“Will be nice at some stage, maybe next season to share the driving duties with Brett.”
The Rodin Cars Super GT Series will consist of four rounds over three months commencing January 15, 2022, at Highlands in Cromwell.
This will be followed by the second round at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Rupauna in Christchurch on January 22-23, before heading to Hampton Downs on February 12-13. The final round will be in Taupo on March 26-27, 2022.
