It’s Hampton Downs Top Half time again with over 130 keen karters from all over the North Island heading to Hamilton this weekend for the opening round of this year’s club-based series on Sunday.
The annual, now Hampton Downs-backed, Top Half Series provides a key link between club and national level competition, offering drivers young and old the opportunity to learn new tracks and test their skills against their peers from other clubs.
“The big thing as far as I am concerned, and the main reason we get such a fantastic response from karters and sponsors alike,” says current organiser Roger Smith, “is that Top Half is a series put together by the clubs for the clubs.
“Because of that; 1) we’re getting karts out of sheds and their owners driving them, 2) we’re purposefully creating a fun, low-stress environment at each meeting, and 3) the predetermined grid draw format racing with large fields helps the newer drives bridge the gap between club and national level.”
Set up over 25 years ago by the KartSport Auckland, Mt Wellington, and Hamilton clubs, the Top Half Series is run each year in conjunction with five others in the northern half of the North Island; KartSport Whangarei, KartSport Bay of Plenty, KartSport Tokoroa, KartSport Rotorua and KartSport Eastern Bay of Plenty.
A bumper prize pool has been a feature of the series in recent years and this year is no different with the prize pool having now topped $37,000 worth of product and/or cash.
As well as individual glory for the drivers, clubs compete against each other for the prestigious Roundabout Kart Shop Trophy.
