Among the high profile names of New Zealand motorsport like Brendon Hartley, Earl Bamber and Marcus Armstrong was the name of Hokimoana Tawa who was presented with the MotorSport New Zealand volunteer of the year award during the organisation’s annual awards night in Wellington.

MotorSport New Zealand president Wayne Christie says: “Like most sports in New Zealand, our sport simply would not exist without our volunteers. Every aspect of the sport involves volunteers – from flag marshals at a race track trained to respond to crash situations for the safety of our competitors, to rally marshals looking after spectators on a remote gravel road, our technical and regulatory personnel, and more – we’re virtually all volunteers.”

Christie says: “It is with great pleasure that we presented Hokimoana Tawa, or Hoki as she’s known, with the volunteer of the year award this year.

“Hoki epitomises all we value in our motorsport volunteers. With her relaxed, friendly and helpful manner, Hoki has built quite the fan base amongst event organisers, competitors and her fellow marshals.

“Hoki travels large distances to attend motor racing events, big and small, and volunteers for various disciplines of the sport, from race events to rallies.

“Fondly regarded for her cheeky sense of humour, Hoki is more than willing to undertake roles for RSQKRU Incorporated, a group of motorsport safety specialists, and the Taupo Car Club, even at a moment’s notice at times.

“Congratulations to Hoki for this very deserving accolade.”

The MotorSport New Zealand annual awards night was held at the TSB Arena in Wellington on Saturday 26 May, and recognises the achievements of competitors, officials, volunteers and media at all levels of four-wheeled motor sports in New Zealand.

The awards evening also saw trophies presented to 2017-18 race, rally, hillclimb and clubsport champions from around the country, as well as an array of certificates and awards acknowledging the contributions of volunteers, officials and media.
