Ryan Woods has made it two wins from two rounds after winning the Carter’s Tyre Service One-Hour South Island Endurance Series- Presented by Michelin race for Class C (2001-3500cc) & D (GT) cars. The 17-year-old (Porsche 991.1) initially had to fight with the very quick Small Brothers for the lead then held it to the chequered flag at the Timaru International Raceway.

“That was a good race,” commented Ryan Woods (Porsche 991 Cup Car). “The Small boys were quick at the start and they raced hard, so I really enjoyed it. Got the fastest lap with just four (laps) to go so happy with that as well. I was wanting to crack the minute mark but happy with the way the car went today.”

“Really happy with that,” commented Johnny Small (Porsche 991.2). “We knew Ryan (Woods) would be very quick and that’s exactly what he was right from the get-go. We actually led the race for a few laps and he had the pressure on us and the smart thing to do was to let him go.”

Porsche filled the top five positions with Marco Schelp (GT3 Cup S) third home ahead of Jarrod Owens (Porsche GT3 997 Cup S) and Ben Byers (Porsche 991.2 GT3).

“Man, that was hard,” said Schelp. “I lost a few positions after the start but was slowly catching. The safety car at the end was fortunate as it closed the field up and I was able to get passed Jarod (Owens) for third.”

Jordan Michels (Ford Focus MARC V8) was sixth and first non-Porsche home in Class D. Bruce Davidson (Chev Corvette C6R) was first home in Class C (>3501cc) ahead of Rick Matheson/Liam Matheson (Mazda RX7) who finished 18th overall.

In the separate One-Hour race for Class A (0-2000cc) and B (2001-3500cc) cars, Rhys Gould (Hyundai i30N TCR) made his win look easy after starting from pitlane and not from pole position. Having broken a drive shaft earlier in qualifying after setting the fastest lap, Gould’s team was in a race of their own to make the start of the race.

“I didn’t have time to worry about it,” commented Gould. “I knew the car was going to be strong and the pit strategy worked out in our favour. The traffic was busy today and it got us clear of the field and we were able to try something different.”

Class B (2001-3500cc) TCR cars filled the top four places with Mike Hall (VW Golf GTi 35) second ahead of Dennis Chapman (Audi TCR LMS) and Scott O’Donnell (Hyundai i30N TCR). Fifth home and first in Class A (0-2000cc) was Andrew Gibson/Paul Booth (Honda Civic).

“That was a bit of a surprise,” said second-placed Hall who also had a top five finish in the opening round. “The car has been great, only off the boat a couple of weeks ago. This is my first full year, first time at Timaru so really happy with the result.”

Scott O’Donnell initially led the field until the halfway mark when a safety car saw much of the field head to pitlane for their compulsory pitstop. Gould, who had pitted very early and worked his way through the field, leaped into the lead which he held to the end, lapping a constant one-second quicker than O’Donnell. Holding third was Daniel Cropp (Honda Civic 2.4) who eventually retired with a power steering failure.

O’Donnell, who finished in third at the opening round in Cromwell a fortnight ago, then suffered from a broken left front driveshaft with a handful of laps to go and slipped back to finish fourth with Dennis Chapman passing within sight of the chequered flag.

“Scott (O’Donnell) was going quite slow so in the end I muscled passed him to get third,” said Chapman. “The car was spot on all day.”

Teams have a quick turn around time for the third of four rounds next weekend, Sunday 24 October 2021, at Teretonga International Raceway in Invercargill.
