The second edition of the Ben Nevis Station Golden 1200 Hillclimb takes place this weekend, 4-5 March, on the highest public road in New Zealand.
Created and run by Paddon Rallysport, this hillclimb event proved outstandingly successful when first run in March 2020.
Over 70 competitors are lining up to take on this magic piece of gravel road with a mix of rally cars, crosscars and quads on the entry list.
This year, the hillclimb course has been shortened to 3.6km, rather than the original 6km course. The shortened course starts at the same place on Ben Nevis Station and includes 22 challenging corners as the road rises from the Nevis Valley back towards Bannockburn. This decision helps lessen the time that competitors are waiting between the six runs scheduled across the two days.
Results for the Ben Nevis Station Golden 1200 are determined by the accumulation of a competitor’s fastest run on Saturday added together with their final run on Sunday, meaning result is secured until Sunday’s final run.
The event is able to go ahead under the Government’s red traffic light settings thanks to MotorSport New Zealand’s Back in Motion guidelines which include protocols such as keeping competitors grouped into designated areas of less than 100 people, keeping these groups separate and limiting interaction with officials and marshals. Vaccine passes are mandatory for all attendees aged over 12 years.
There will be no spectators at this year’s Golden 1200, however motorsport fans can enjoy the action with two livestreams planned to cover the final, all-important timed runs on Saturday and Sunday. [We’ll email you the livestream link as soon as it’s available.] These will be shown live on the Paddon Rallysport Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/paddonrallysport.
