West Auckland’s Clint Cunningham has been left gutted after his campaign at the latest round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, Rally Gisborne, was over before it began when an electrical problem stopped him in his tracks.
Cunningham and co-driver Thomas Thexton were touring to the start of the opening competitive special stage when a failure of the crank angle sensor left the RCK Mitsubishi stranded on the side of the road.
With his service crew left unable to fix the problem as the car was outside the service park, Cunningham had to make the heart breaking decision to put the car on the trailer without a single competitive mile on the car.
Rather than reflect on the negatives, Cunningham and his team took the opportunity to go spectating and cheer on his fellow competitors, reminding him of the fun that can be had in motorsport, even when the chips are down.
“Obviously I’m gutted, it just stopped and being an electrical item there were no warning signs or any evidence that the part might be failing, it really just comes down to bad luck,” said Cunningham. “But it was a fun afternoon out having a look, it was a chance to remind myself how cool this sport is, even when it doesn’t always go your way.”
The Clinton Cunningham Rallysport team now regroup for the final round of the NZRC season, Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel, on August 20.
