Successful Southland motorsport promotion

The Eastern Southland Car Club motorsport promotion for both young drivers under 18 years of age and also for ladies near Balclutha last Saturday was a tremendous success.

Taking the form of a Grass Autocross, the event was held on the property of club members Barry & Carolyn Mills, who had laid out a 1.3 kilometre course widely described as “magic” and which featured several tricky downhill corners.

A very pleasing 46 entries were received – twelve in Class A for males aged under 18, nine in Class B for ladies under 18, fourteen in Class C for new or inexperienced drivers and eleven in Class D for more experienced competitors.

While the event was primarily about participation the overall winner was young Carlos Goatley of Balclutha driving his mother Sharon’s Subaru Impreza WRX in Class A ahead of two Class D competitors, Rachel Lawrie in a Mitsubishi Mirage and Brodie Henderson in a Toyota Starlet who both repeated their exact results from the club’s similar promotion in March.
