Dylan Thomson and co-driver Bayden Thomson head to the Otago Rally this weekend as favourites to take out the second round of the 2026 Mainland Rally Championship (MRC).  Thomson won the Westland Rally, the opening round of the MRC, just two weeks ago which was his first outing in the ex-Ben Hunt NZ Championship winning Skoda Fabia Rally 2.

“It’s a pretty awesome car,” commented Thomson.  “We head to Otago with some confidence as we achieved everything we wanted to at Westland.”

Thomson’s’ rivals will not be letting up on the pressure with James McIver (Subaru Impreza H6) and Deane Buist (Toyota Trueno – main photo) in second and third overall.

“We’ll have the same mindset at Otago as we did at Westland,” said McIver.  “We will keep it clean, do our own thing, find a rhythm and be consistent.

“I did Otago last year in a Mk2 Escort.  Was my first taste of the awesome event so I can understand why it is so popular.”
