With two rounds (six races) left in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Christchurch’s Marcus Armstrong will be digging deep this weekend in Austria trying to tip the title in his favour. Having led through the mid-part of the season, the European based teenager has now slipped to third overall, 44 points off leader Daniel Ticktum.
PREMA Theodore Racing team mate Mick Schumacher will be back on track after a top weekend at Nürburgring, where he won three races out of three and got within three points of the series lead. The 19-year-old German experienced a sensational middle part of the season and is now the driver with the most wins this season with six race victories.
Armstrong paid the price of qualifying woes in the previous round but maximized his points score. Standing fifth, Estonian Ralf Aron can never be counted out with his four wins, while Robert Shwartzman is on the move after scoring points in the last 12 races including three second-place finishes at Nürburgring. Last but not least, Chinese ace Guanyu Zhou is looking forward to rebounding from an ill-fated middle stint of the season.
Starting position and finishing each race is key. Armstrong has had his share of ill-luck this season and now needs race wins, each worth 25 points. The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg has been favourable to Armstrong. He had a win and twice finished third in the ADAC German F4 champs last season.
