Nick Cassidy has finished third after Nick de Vries (Mercedes-EQ) was hit by a five-second penalty after his defence against Cassidy (Envision Racing) towards the end of the SABIC London E-Prix Round 13 was deemed by race stewards to have contravened the regulations.
De Vries found himself under severe pressure from Cassidy as the final couple of laps arrived and set about keeping the Envision Racing driver at bay but his efforts were found to have been too much – the stewards adjudging him to have change direction repeatedly under braking. This leaves the Dutchman sixth, with Cassidy the beneficiary to the tune of third on the podium and some welcome silverware for the cabinet.
Importantly, Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) also gains a spot, which could prove extremely valuable in his chase of Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes-EQ) in the Drivers’ World Championship.
British driver Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) delivered a commanding lights-to-flag performance to win the first race of the double-header, repeating his exploits of last season on the unique outdoor/indoor street circuit at ExCeL London. Mercedes-EQ’s Vandoorne was content to play it cool to come home second for a 17th Formula E podium, with his closest championship rivals marooned down the pack.
It’s back to ExCeL London tomorrow (Sunday) for Round 14 in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and the last stop before Season 8 concludes with Rounds 15 and 16 in Seoul, the first time the all-electric series has visited South Korea.
