Nick Cassidy has not been able to capitalise on his pole position at Suzuka, Japan, in the penultimate round of the Super Formula Series over the weekend.
Cassidy’s engine appeared to expire on the ninth lap while leading the 30-lap race, allowing Toshiki Oyu to take over and eventually win the race.
Championship leader Naoki Yamamoto was another early retirement dashing his hopes of extending his points gap.
Having recovered from 14th to finish seventh, Ryo Hirakawa is now tied at the top of the leader board with Yamamoto on 55-points with both drivers now not needing to drop scores ahead of this month’s Fuji finale.
Cassidy is third on total scores but fourth behind Tomoki Nojiriwhen dropped scores are considered.
The final round at Fuji takes place 19-20 December 2020
