Two race wins and a second place has catapulted young Kiwi driver Liam Lawson into second overall in the ADAC German Formula 4 Championships after the third round held at Lausitzring over the weekend.
Lawson (Van Amersfoort Racing) won the seventh race of the season, his maiden German F4 victory, from Enzo Fittipaldi ( Prema Theodore Racing) and Mick Wishofer (US Racing CHRS) in an action-packed race.
Championship leader Lirim Zendeli (US Racing CHRS) retired just before the end.
“I feel great, for sure! I dropped behind initially and would never have thought I could still win,” said Lawson. “But anything is always possible in a race. I was a bit lucky, but what does it matter – we were quick, and that’s what counts ultimately.”
In the second race of the round, Zendeli further consolidated his lead in the overall standings with his fifth victory in the eighth race. Zendeli comfortably completed a lights-to-flag victory in the afternoon race, followed across the line by Lawson in second place and Oliver Caldwell ( Prema Theodore Racing) in third.
“I’m obviously feeling great,” commented Lawson after the race. “At the beginning I fell behind a bit, and at that stage, I thought that victory would be out of my reach. But in a race situation, anything is always possible. It was a bit lucky, but that doesn’t matter – we were fast, and that’s all that counts.”
Lawson then rounded off a strong performance winning the third and final race celebrating his second win of the weekend.
“To be honest, I’m a bit speechless. We had some problems on Friday, so I never really thought that such success could be possible. It’s great that we were able to show how fast we are,” said a delighted Lawson.
Second place in Sunday’s race went to Charles Weerts (Van Amersfoort Racing), giving the Dutch outfit a one-two win. Mick Wishofer ( US Racing CHRS) was third.
The ADAC Formula 4 juniors will head next to the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg, Austria, for the third meeting of the season in three weeks’ time and races ten, eleven and twelve.
