New Zealand Formula Ford drivers have once again delivered New Zealand Motorsport with top candidates for the latest scholarships and Academy’s with three North Island Formula Ford drivers making the short list for the Toyota 86 Academy prize.
North Island Formula Ford Champion Matt Mccutcheon and fellow competitors Liam Sceats and newcomer for 2021 Hayden Bakkerus were vying for the 30k prize put up by the Hampton Downs Racing Academy, with Mccuteon coming out on top.
Backing up this latest Academy announcement was the Elite Motorsport Academy recipients in June which five of the eight recipients were Formula Ford Drivers and was won by Christchurch’s James Penrose who claimed the trifecta this year with wins in the South Island Series, New Zealand Championship and Formula Ford Festival which was rewarded with a prize to race in the UK Formula Ford Festival.
Talented New Zealand drivers competing offshore at present like Liam Lawson, Matthew Payne, Billy Frazer and Callum Hedge all have Formula Ford history etched into their CV along with Shane Van Gisbergen, Fabian Coulthard, Andre Heimgartner, Mitch Evans and many, many more.
With the TR86 series now out of cars, you can make an entry into Formula Ford which has cars available for sale and lease along with a 60k prize and travel fund for all competitors to share. There is a 42k travel fund for National Championship competitors, 8k of pole position awards over 12 races and 3 TRS tests for regional and National Championship winners thanks to the Tony Quinn Foundation and the Hampton Downs Racing Academy.
The Giltrap Group North Island Formula Ford series hopes to kick off on December 11-12 with the all new Yokohama Tyre set to even the competition up with a 2x Qually, six-race weekend at Hampton Downs with further rounds under review for later in the season.
