Though they have all missed rounds due to commitments to other championships the three Red Bull Juniors, Jack Doohan, Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson are ready to put everything into the hunt for more success at the penultimate round of the Euroformula Open this weekend in Catalunya.
With almost five hours of testing on Thursday there was plenty of time for the three to get back into the Euroformula groove.
Lawson gets up to speed
Lawson settled in during the day and the 17-year-old New Zealander was
third quickest in the second afternoon session. “It was OK, a bit of a
messy day to be honest. We had lots of new tyres, that’s always good as a
driver but it gave us a lot to try, we played a lot with balance. In
fact the quickest lap was quite scrappy, there is a lot more we can find
in only a few corners so there is more to come.”
“Tomorrow (Friday) the times will be pretty irrelevant I think, we are running after F3 regional with different tyres so the grip levels will not be good. We will probably concentrate on some race runs and look for lap times in Qualifying on Saturday.”
“If I can get it together like I should I think we’ll have a good weekend,” concluded the Motopark driver.
Straight to the front for Tsunoda
Fresh from his FIA F3 success, a first and a third at Monza, Tsunoda took little time to get reacquainted with the Euroformula car and was fastest in the first three hour session. He was quickest again at the start of the afternoon.
“We are doing well but it is very close so there is no reason to relax,” stated the 19-year-old Japanese. “I know that I still have to work, there are certainly areas where I can improve and I think we can get a bit more out of the car as well.”
“It is such a different feeling when you have a whole day of free practice like this, so different compared to F3. It is not my favourite track but it is OK, I like it, let’s say 3.5 out of 5,” concluded the Motopark driver with a smile.
Doohan quickest three pointer
Coming back to Europe after driving his Asian F3 in China, Doohan was finding his way round Barcelona for the first time. “It’s a good track,” stated the 16-year-old Australian. “I really enjoy driving the Euroformula car and just from this morning I already like this track so I think it’s going to be a good weekend. I have never been here before and some of the others know it well but I think I got the hang of it quite well this morning and I can work on it from here.”
“We are not as quick as we would like to be but fastest Mercedes and the missing bit seems mostly in the first sector so we’ll have to see what we can do about that,” added the Double R Racing driver. “As I said, not a bad start, keep working and get the best out of the car and the track.”
Doohan did exactly that and was fourth fastest in the final afternoon session on Thursday, just 0.373 off the quickest.
