It’s been a 12 month wait for Liam Lawson since he was disqualified and stripped of victory for a technical non-conformity, following the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship Sprint Race in Monte Carlo.

“Super excited for Monaco, obviously,” commented Lawson. “First time driving there last year was an amazing experience. I feel like we need a bit of redemption after what happened then.

“Regardless of that I am just excited to be able to drive on that track again, so much history, and an incredible place to drive.

“We know what needs to be improved after Barcelona, that will be the target for Monaco, It’s a shame we didn’t nail it at Montmeló as the pace was pretty strong all weekend.”

The fourth round of the 2022 series saw a less than ideal qualifying for Lawson ending up 16th on the grid. The Sprint race saw a top ten finish but outside of the points while a remarkable first lap of the Feature Race had Lawson move from 16th to ninth where he eventually finished. He still sits fourth overall on the F2 points table.

“I’ve had pretty good first laps this year, which I think has been one of our strong points,” he said. “Obviously, we don’t want to be having to make up these positions. We want to already be starting in that front group but I think it’s definitely been one of our strengths so far.”

Now the focus is on the fifth round at the Monaco F1 Grand Prix this weekend.

“I’ve been thinking about it all year! I got the race win taken away from me last year, so I’m hoping for a bit of redemption this year. Aside from that, I’m excited to be driving on the track. There’s a lot of history there – I’ve been playing that track on the F1 game since I was seven years old.”
