Mari Boya continued Campos Racing’s strong form at the FIA F3 Championship Sakhir in-season test at the Bahrain International Circuit, by ending Day 2 of running with the fastest time, leaving it late in the afternoon session to complete a 1:48.640. The Spaniard was 0.282s clear of Kiwi Louis Sharp in second, the Rodin Motorsport driver showing good pace having also ended with the quickest time in the morning segment.
“I am feeling really confident and feeling good with the team,” said Sharp. “We’ve worked really hard over the winter and these first few times with the car, and we are both confident with the package we’ve got.”
MORNING
Day 2 was off to a quick start with the fastest time changing hands several times early on, but it was eventually Van Amersfoort Racing’s Santiago Ramos that set the pace on a 1:48.843.
Ramos’ time was over two-and-a-half tenths clear of second-placed James Wharton, but with 20 minutes gone, Campos Racing’s Mari Boya eclipsed the Mexican’s time by 0.107s to go to P1.
As the hour mark approached, Rodin Motorsport’s Louis Sharp rocketed to the top of the timesheets, beating Boya’s lap by just 0.330s, thanks to his 1:48.703.
AFTERNOON
Hitech TGR made their move up the leaderboard in the final hour of the day. Gerrard Xie led the way with a 1:49.416, just 0.017s quicker than Martinius Stenshorne, as Joshua Dufek rounded out the top three.
But there were more changes to come at the top as the day entered into its final 10 minutes. Wharton and Sharp took turns in P1, before Boya put Campos Racing on top with a 1:48.640.
Several drivers were able to improve their times later on, but Boya remained untouched, sealing P1 by 0.282s to Sharp, with Wharton in third for ART.
“Overall, a really good day,” Sharp said. “The team did a really good job, and the car was feeling very strong. It’s my first time in Bahrain, obviously we tested yesterday, so I got a little bit of an understanding.
“Yesterday was pretty tricky with traffic on the new tyres, so I think we had quite a lot of unshown pace. So, to go out today and actually put it together, we really maximised all our new tyre runs. It showed up in the lap time, and the feeling in the car was definitely very good.”
“Obviously, the nature of F3, you don’t get a lot of mileage, not a lot of testing opportunities, but I am really enjoying it. The car is really cool, obviously it’s a new car, but I had a little bit of experience in the old car.”
The drivers will get one final day of in-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit tomorrow, starting at 09:30 local time.
