Kyan Davie has claimed victory at the opening round of the 2021/22 Giltrap Group North Island Formula Ford Series opener at Hampton Downs over the weekend.

Davie, from Auckland, was one of three winners over the three races but his pole position which came with a $500 cheque from the Hampton Downs NZ Race Academy and consistency put him at the top of the points table for the weekend.

Rookie Hayden Bakkerus, also from Auckland, was declared the winner of race 1 after some post-race penalties but his consistency wrapped up second overall while another rookie, Aucklander, Sebastian Manson, fresh from karting took an exciting maiden win in race 3 after a blinding start.

Manson who started from P2 rocketed off the line from pole man Davie who had a shocker and after re passing a couple of cars started hunting down Manson and finished short by a foot in the end of the 8 lap race.

This was the first time the category has raced on the new Yokohama tyre and as predicted, the racing was very tight and very close with battle packs dominating the field.

Other noteworthy performances were Leo Scott from Whangarei, Liam Sceats, Mason Potter, Bailey Cruse and NIFF Scholarship driver Josh Andrew. Class 3 honours were taken by Mike Davidson in his beautifully restored Reynard which he drove in the late 80’s. Davie leads with 214 points from Bakkerus on 184 and Manson on 174.

The Giltrap Group North Island Formula Ford Series now takes a break and resumes at Taupo on February 27.
