The Team Penske technical infringement leading up to the Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is continuing to unfold and becoming more intriguing.
Team Penske’s drivers #2 Josef Newgarden and #12 Will Power will start from the back of the grid after a technical inspection on last Sunday’s qualifying session found a modified attenuator. The third Team Penske car, the #3 of Kiwi Scott McLaughlin was found to be legal with no modification.
Last year’s winning Newgarden Penske car is currently on display in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum with a similar modification to its attenuator. (See Speedcafe.com article Last year’s Indy 500 winner spotted with illegal modification).
In the YouTube clip below, IndyCar President Doug Boles announces the upgraded penalties to Team Penske for modified attenuators. Boles gives a good explanation of how IndyCar decided on the penalties, the importance of the Indy 500 integrity and goes on to answer some tough questions from media.
Expect more to come before Sunday’s race.
