Fortune shone on Louis Sharp at the Hungaroring round of the 2024 GB3 Championship in Hungary. The bizarre disqualification of rival Tymek Kucharczyk from the Race 2 results gave Sharp some relief in the title points chase and helped propel him into the overall lead at the end of the weekend.
Sharp rebounded from an average Race one result by winning the second of three races for the round. Kucharczyk finished second and at that stage, led Sharp on the championship table by 13-points.
However, following the conclusion of the second race, Kucharczyk’s #22 car was found to be technically non-compliant in that it did not have an operable fire extinguisher following post-race examination.
The Stewards, having summoned and heard from both Kucharczyk and his team representative and watched on-board video from car #22, determined that the fire extinguisher was activated during the formation lap.
Bizarrely, Kucharczyk, aware of foam appearing in the cockpit, continued to the start line and completed the full race. Neither he or his team decided it would be beneficial to pit either showing a disregard or not being knowledgeable of the rules.
Consequently, the Stewards deemed that the car was technically non-compliant throughout the race (in breach of Article 3 of the 2024 GB3 Championship Partnered by the BRDC Technical Regulations) and that the driver was in breach of Article 12.2.1.k of the ISC.
Car #22 was accordingly disqualified from the results of GB3 Race 2 and the driver, Tymek Kucharczyk, is now obligated to accomplish some work of public interest at the next round at Zandvoort (13-14 July 2024) to be determined by the Stewards of that Event.
Sharp went on to finish fourth in the final Race 3 and leads the championship by one-point to rival Will McIntyre with Kucharczyk in third, 20-points behind second position.
