Australian based Kiwi driver Hunter McElrea writes after competing in the second round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park…..

This weekend I raced at Round 2 of the Australian National Formula Ford Championship which was another solid round of learning for me.

There was yet again a very solid field of cars, eight extra cars than Sandown so there was a field of 24! I was overall happy with the result of the weekend, coming away with P9 overall.

The Sydney Motorsport Park Track was another new layout for me, which made it more of a challenge against experienced drivers who knew the track well! I am happy with my improvements, and I still have some areas I need to fix, however I am very confident that I am going to get close to the front soon.

It is very hard to explain how tough the competition is, but I guess that the easiest way to explain it is that usually it takes 1-2 years for a driver to win the championship, and that almost everyone else in the top 10 has a couple years of experience under their belt. Even though it is extremely tough, I cannot explain how grateful and privileged I am to be position I am doing my passion! I am loving every bit.

Another exciting thing I have to say, is that I have been selected in the Motorsport New Zealand Elite Academy!

This is an amazing opportunity, and I am extremely exited to have been one of the 8 athletes selected, out of the 130 applicants. This programme has benefitted people like WEC World Champion Brendon Hartley, Aston Martin Factory Driver Richie Stanaway, GP3 World champion Mitch Evans, WRC World Rally winner Haydon Paddon, and many more Kiwi Champions. You can read about it here: Eight young competitors selected for next Elite Motorsport Academy

I would really like to thank all my sponsors, Torelli Motorsport and it was great to wear my new Freem Race wear suit.

Many Thanks,

Hunter

P.S I have some very exciting news coming up in the next month.
