It was a disappointing day for Marcus Armstrong and his PREMA Theodore Racing at the latest round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at Spa. With his third victory of the season Daniel Ticktum (Motopark) took over the lead in the drivers’ standings. Marcus Armstrong secured sixth place at the end of a spectacular recovery after being involved in a first-lap melee that took out of contention Mick Schumacher and Guanyu Zhou.
“It was definitely not an easy day,” commented Armstrong. “In race 1 I had to retire following contact, and in race 2 I was caught in a melee at the start. Still, I managed to fight back to P6 which is pretty ok.”
Ticktum finished ahead of Fabio Scherer (Motopark) while Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) secured third place. Ralf Aron (PREMA Theodore Racing), who had only taken the lead in the drivers’ standings a few hours earlier, lost it again as he didn’t score any points in the 14th race of the season due to an accident.
Earlier in race 1, having started from pole position, Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) took the win from Spaniard Alex Palou (Hitech Bullfrog GP). Third place went to Ralf Aron (PREMA Theodore Racing), the Estonian also took over the lead in the championship drivers’ standings. Rookie driver Marcus Armstrong (PREMA Theodore Racing), who came to the 7.004 kilometres long Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as the points’ leader, retired from the race and dropped to second in the drivers’ standings.
Drivers and teams face a third and final race tonight.
