Tyre change on the horizon for Formula Ford

There are three separate Formula Ford clubs that run the three key series in NZ. Both the South Island (SIFF) and North Island (NIFF) Formula Ford Clubs’ run their respective series while Formula Ford NZ runs the national championship. At the moment you can pretty much run your car in the same setup in each of these competitions. The question is, if one club decides to change the way they conduct their racing, will the other two follow?

The SIFF Club committee have recently decided to change their control tyre away from the Avon ACB10 to the Yokohama A046.

They have conducted their own due diligence and concluded that there are benefits for their members to bring about the change.

The major benefit, and it appears to be the driving force behind the change, is the significant cost saving.

Currently the price of the Avon tyre is approximately $1,376.32 a set whereas the SIFF Club have negotiated a price of the Yokohama tyre at $990 a set, fixed for the contracted period of five years.

(Note: For Class 3 Formula Ford, only the Yokohama AO48 will be an option alongside the Dunlop CR82 and the Avon ACB9).

It looks like the change will take place in time for the 2021/22 season with getting the change approved, along with the other technical amendments, from Motorsport New Zealand, plus a lead time of four months for Yokohama product to be shipped in to the country.

So, will the North Island Formula Ford and the Formula Ford NZ Clubs follow and adopt the same Yokohama tyre?
