This weekend the 2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship gets underway with just three Kiwi drivers starting in this year’s series. The Clipsal 500 around the streets of Adelaide sees the return of two 250-kilometre races, held on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a race that features a number of firsts. Simona De Silvestro in car #78 (Nissan) becomes first full-time female driver in the Supercars era. Sixteen-year-old Alex Rullo becomes the youngest driver to race in the 58-year history of the VASC (Australian Touring Car Championship), and for the first time two Top 10 Shootouts will determine the ARMOR ALL Pole Position for both races.

2016 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen is staying with the Red Bull Holden Racing Team while Scott McLaughlin moves from Garry Rogers Motorsport to join fellow Kiwi Fabian Coulthard at DJR Team Penske. Nine brand new Supercars make their debut (Red Bull Holden, Garry Rogers Motorsport, Prodrive, Erebus, Nissan and DJR Team Penske) and drivers will race for the first time on the new Dunlop soft and super-soft tyres.
